COSMIC THURSDAYS, a series of public and free talks on astronomy. The talks are designed with the general audience in mind. They are fun, easy to understand, and engaging.

  • Date: Thursday, February 27 – 7:00 PM
  • Speaker:  Dr. Warren Skidmore (Thirty Meter Telescope International Observatory)
  • Place: UC Riverside, Winston Chung Hall, Room 205/206
  • Talk: The Thirty Meter Telescope: What, Why and How.

Do you know that we are planning to build a gigantic telescope that would enable astronomers to see things ~10 times fainter than they currently do? In this talk Dr. Skidmore will be discussing the Thirty Meter Telescope observatory development activities, the exciting scientific questions that drive the building of a giant telescope, how the observatory is designed to support a range of scientific studies and about the engineering solutions that have been developed to overcome the technical problems of constructing and operating a giant diffraction limited observatory. Some pieces of hardware will be on display and information sheets and free giveaways will be available to take away.

Telescope viewings will follow the lecture, starting from 8:00pm on the lawn North of Bourns Hall.
